Hi and welcome to this lesson in the Essential Speaker’s programme. What we’re going to do today is unpack some of the issues that help define who you are. Because think about it — if you do not know what you are or where you’re going, the chances of you being that or getting there is a lot lower. So we’ve got a series of self-assessment questions for you. Now, there’s no wrong answer. There’s no right answer, but I want you to do this seriously and not sit there and go, I’m going to chase the money. Because in my experience, in not only speaking, but running entrepreneurial businesses and coaching many hundreds of other businesses over the last three decades, one thing that we found is that people who chase money are always going to be chasing money, and those who chase passion and purpose find that the money follows them. So I want you to find your passion. I want you to find your purpose as a speaker. The assessment covers ten key areas: what category of speaker you are (motivational, content, inspirational, etc.); what style of speaker you are (comedic, educational, entertaining, etc.); what function of speaker you are (keynote, facilitation, training, coaching, MC); where you are now as a speaker; where you want to speak (conferences, conventions, summits, seminars); how you want people to see you; who your defined audience is; how you want to make money; how well you are positioned; and how others find and know about you. The seven homework actions are: take the assessment; define your position as a speaker; cross out what is not you; underline the maybes; highlight what you need to be; circle what you want to be; and start becoming that person today.

Making money from speaking is not all about standing in the spotlight on a big stage. There are many forms of speaking that will often create multiple income streams for your business. Based on last lesson’s self-assessment, today we explore what type of speaker you want to be. There are three broad categories of speakers to understand. Public Speakers are people who speak in public — at church, community halls, work presentations, or social events like weddings and office parties. Public speaking is where most of us start, and Toastmasters is an excellent place to develop these foundational skills: removing ‘ums’, improving eye contact, mastering the pause, and controlling nervous energy. Speaking Professionals are specialists in their sector, often academically qualified. They are invited to speak based on their qualifications and industry expertise — health, engineering, science, finance. They share knowledge from within their sector. Professional Speakers are thought leaders who bring a different proposition or new methodology to the market. They come in with their own content — derived, created, and refined into proposals they deliver from the stage. Within these categories, you can position yourself as a Keynoter (delivering 45-60 minute headline speeches), a Speaker (with multiple adaptable speeches), a Facilitator (guiding processes of change), a Trainer (delivering set curricula), a Coach (working one-on-one or in small groups), a Consultant (bringing expertise into companies for specific projects), or an MC (Master of Ceremonies). The key advice: prioritise two or three areas to start. You cannot be everything to everyone from the beginning — it is counterproductive and will destroy you emotionally, physically, and financially. Focus first, then diversify.

Lesson 3 – Virtual Setup

We get into the virtual world this lesson and dive into what makes your virtual home studio a professional one that will command high fees on the speaking circuit. We do not recommend that you go out and buy all these items today (unless you have the cash), but rather add to your studio as and when you can afford it, continually building up your proficiency and expertise. It is vitally important to be a competent speaker who can operate both on stage, virtually, and in a hybrid environment. The entry-level requirements for a professional virtual setup cover several key areas. Microphone: Eliminate the use of cell phone, laptop, or earbud microphones. Invest in a proper external microphone — even a Logitech webcam microphone delivers excellent quality. Ensure your environment is echo-free by speaking towards a wall with a thick curtain, and position your speakers away from your microphone to prevent feedback. Camera: Do not use your laptop camera. Get an external HD Logitech camera (720p or above). Set it at eye level, about a metre from your face, in landscape orientation for proper framing. Lighting: Essential for grey hair and dark skin tones. Two simple variable LED lights positioned to eliminate shadows work well. Ring lights are excellent but be careful of reflections in glasses — look directly at the camera to minimise glare. Additional screens: A second or third screen allows you to manage chats, participants, and slides without switching windows. Stream Deck programmable buttons let you advance slides, mute/unmute, and share screens at the touch of a button. A visible clock helps you manage time without checking your screen. Paid Zoom account: Migrate from a free account to access longer calls, recording, and professional settings. Use real wallpaper backgrounds rather than virtual backgrounds, which cause hands to disappear. Consider Prezi Video for professional on-screen overlays with your name, title, and branding.

Lesson 4 – Virtual Screen Craft

Virtual screen craft is a skill that most people using online platforms have not even thought of, let alone mastered. This lesson dives into what it takes to elevate your online presenting to a professional level. After this, you will be the best looking and performing person on the screen. This lesson covers framing, Zoom settings, and the use of your three-dimensional virtual space. Framing: Set your camera at eye level with about three fingers of headspace above your head. Position yourself centrally or to one side. Ensure your hands have space to gesture within the frame. Keep the camera about a metre away for a professional frame — not too close, not too small. Zoom Audio Settings: Go to Audio Settings. Set the audio profile to medium or high background noise removal. Uncheck ‘automatically adjust microphone volume’ and set your microphone to about 70-80%. This prevents Zoom from cutting off the first words of each sentence. Zoom Video Settings: Use original ratio and HD setup (16:9). Do not enable any automatic appearance adjustments — take full control of your environment rather than letting the software continually adjust. Three-Dimensional Space: Even though your audience sees you as a 2D image, you can project as a 3D person. Use the space between yourself and the camera. Remember to reverse left-right movements for your audience — use post-it notes as guides (1-2-3 from your right to left). Utilise the X-axis (left-right), Y-axis (up-down), and Z-axis (toward and away from camera) to create a powerful cubic space of interaction. Slide Sharing: Always share the slideshow, not the PowerPoint application. Use a second device signed in as a participant to verify what your audience sees — this eliminates the amateur question of ‘can you see my slides?’ Use real backgrounds rather than virtual backgrounds, and consider on-screen display overlays with tools like Prezi Video for branding.

Whenever you step onto the stage, you become your brand. Your appearance, first impressions, outfit, mannerisms, and presentation become your brand. As a speaker, it is vitally important to assemble your brand — and that does not always mean dressing up to the nines. Sometimes you can strip it down and be less to be more. Key principles: A jacket is generally a good idea, but dressing should represent who you are as a speaker. Rather be the smartest person in the room than under-dressed. Consider consulting a fashion or colour consultant to find your colours — your colours should be consistent across your website, social media, memes, and stage appearance, just as you would create a brand book for a company. Be mindful of distractions rather than attractions: low-cut tops, short skirts, dangly earrings, sparkles, items that are too loose or too tight. Get third-party opinions. Practice all your stage movements — walking upstairs, bending over, sitting down — in your outfit before performing on stage. Your brand is more than clothing. It includes mannerisms, gestures, opening lines, and closing lines. Research speakers you admire, study their brand elements, and develop your own authentic signature. Authenticity is not replication — it is finding where your brand is and who you are. Consider a twice-yearly consultation with a fashion and brand consultant to stay current.

Lesson 6 – Stagecraft

Stagecraft introduces three critical concepts: stage entry, stage use, and stage exit. Stage Entry: Your presentation starts before you reach the stage. Always have a holding slide ready. Wait in the wings until the MC finishes introducing you — do not stand next to the MC looking like you are waiting. Consider entering from the back of the room while clicking your first slide for maximum impact. Your first moments should be captivating — whether that is purposeful silence, a powerful opening question, or a dramatic entrance. Lecterns: Lecterns create a barrier between you and your audience. If possible, step away from the lectern. A confident casual pose — such as leaning on the lectern with one hand in a pocket — projects control without the barrier. Lighting and Sound: Always do a sound and light check before your presentation. If there is a videographer, communicate about your movement style so they can follow you with the camera. Stage Exit: Your presentation does not finish when you stop speaking. It finishes when you have exited the stage. Remain silent after your last words. Gather your belongings confidently. Check for stairs, and exit with confidence. Never trust that the microphone is off — remain silent until you are completely off stage. Get to the venue early. Walk the stage before the audience arrives. Practice your entry and exit. These little rehearsals make the difference between an amateur and an essential speaker.

Your voice is the instrument you get paid for playing — learn to use it well. Just as a gymnast goes to the gym and athletes do warm-ups, speakers should warm up their voice before taking the stage. The key elements are tone, pitch, and loudness. Important concepts from Transactional Analysis: Communication works best at adult-to-adult level. Avoid speaking down to people (adult-to-child), as this alienates audiences and triggers negative responses. Always speak to the back of the room to maintain that equal-level energy. Never do accented voices or character imitations in stories unless you are a trained actor — incorrect accents are insulting to the people being imitated. Practical guidelines: Learn to slow down — most speakers speak too fast. Add emotion and character to your voice. Use pauses to allow information to sink in, and audiences will look down, write, look up, and engage. Stage mapping involves understanding three key areas of the stage: centre stage (neutral zone, typically where the lectern is), stage right (from the audience’s perspective, the more powerful side), and stage left. The most powerful place to speak from is stage left from your perspective (stage right from the audience’s). This is where you gesture to your slides and command the room — your power play zone. Centre stage is neutral territory. Stage left (your side) is your secondary space, ideal for storytelling and personal anecdotes. You also have front-of-stage and back-of-stage dimensions. Moving back makes you smaller and allows you to fade into the background. Moving forward projects your points directly at the audience. Combined with sitting, standing, and even lying down, you have a full three-dimensional space to work with. Critical principles: Be consistent with your stage positions. If you tell stories from one area, always return to that area for stories. Do not wander aimlessly — walk with purpose. If needed, draw out your stage map and use masking tape markers, just as actors ‘hit their marks’ in theatre. Map gestures to specific positions for consistency. The audience will learn to anticipate your movements and emotional zones.

Lesson 9 – Emotional Casting

Emotional casting works like fishing: you build up your lure, cast it into the audience, and then slowly retrieve the energy back. Think of the Airbender building a ball of energy and then releasing it. The process: Tell a story or present facts, building momentum and information. Then, at a pivotal moment, cast that energy into the audience with a gesture or a direct question like ‘What about you?’ or ‘Where do you find yourself in this situation?’ People may physically lean back as the information hits them. After casting, you are empty. Now you retrieve energy by seeking acknowledgement: ‘So some of you are thinking about this. What about that?’ As people nod and look up, you are pulling energy back for the next wave. Critical principle: Allow emotions to marinate. If you have cast a powerful emotion, do not rush on. Let the audience sit with it. If they are laughing, let them laugh. If they are processing, give them silence. Do not interrupt their experience because you need to move to your next point. The cycle is: build, cast, pause, retrieve, build, cast, pause, retrieve. End your speech on your final and most powerful emotional cast — a mic drop moment — and walk off the stage. Study presidential speeches, army generals motivating troops, and great political leaders for examples of masterful emotional casting.

The simple recommendation is: avoid Q&A sessions if at all possible. Offer a QR code or contact information instead, and have conversations afterwards. The risk to your reputation from difficult or hostile questions on stage is significant. If Q&A is required, use these techniques. First, insist on a microphone for the audience so you can hear clearly. Second, always repeat the question to confirm understanding and ensure the entire audience has heard it. Third, acknowledge the question with varied responses — do not keep repeating ‘that’s a great question.’ Use alternatives like ‘I love that question, it comes up often’ or ‘No one’s ever asked me that — that’s really powerful.’ For difficult questions you cannot answer: say ‘Can I come and talk to you afterwards? I’d love to have that discussion.’ For questions outside your expertise: ‘That’s way outside my area of expertise. Can I get back to you on that?’ Or refer to a colleague or another panel member. Never make answers up. Answer the question you repeated (which you have framed), not necessarily the exact question asked. Repeat the question and your answer multiple times for emphasis and confirmation. Do not ask ‘Have I answered your question fully?’ as this opens risk. Simply move on: ‘Are there any other questions?’ Never get into a two-way discussion from the stage with someone in the audience you cannot see or hear properly.

Head: Avoid head bobbing (like a rock concert) and use intentional head nodding instead. When listening on panels or in virtual group settings, conscious nodding shows engagement without distraction. This is especially important for women with earrings or long hair. Shoulders: Tension in shoulders signals stress. Dropped shoulders signal lack of confidence. Hold shoulders back in a confident but relaxed position. Arms and Hands: Open arms invite the audience into your space. When not gesturing, let arms rest at your sides or lightly clasped in front. Never cross arms, hide hands behind your back, or adopt the power pose (arms akimbo). Do not sway, rock, or stand on one leg. Walk with purpose — do not wander aimlessly. Moving around constricts breathing and engages core muscles unnecessarily. Microphone types and techniques: Stand Microphone: Ask for it to be adjusted to your height. The mic should be below your chin, not blocking your face. Use the height adjustment screw and the angle screw. If following a taller/shorter speaker, have it adjusted before you begin. Handheld Microphone: Hold it in your non-dominant hand. Press it gently against your chest and keep it there for the duration. This ensures consistent sound. Do not wave it around, hold it like a rapper, or hide behind it. Switch hands by stopping, transferring, and repositioning. Clip-on (Lapel) Microphone: Do not place it too close to your mouth. Do a sound check before going on stage. Ensure clothes are not rubbing against it. Ear-piece Microphone: Clip behind the ear and squeeze the wire to secure it. Bend the wire so the microphone sits near your cheek but not touching it (especially with facial hair). If makeup or cream prevents tape from sticking, skip the tape and secure with the wire shape. Run the cable down your back. Women wearing dresses should plan for the clip-on transmitter — use a belt or sewn-in pouch. Before going on stage, do full head movements (left, right, up, down) to ensure nothing pulls loose. Clicker: Own one (Logitech is the industry standard). Remove batteries when not in use to prevent leaking. Know your buttons by feel: slide forward, slide back, blank screen, and play. Avoid the laser pointer. Be conscious of the on/off switch — avoid accidentally toggling it while holding the clicker.

The era of heading-and-bullet-point slides is over. The new standard for professional speakers requires a completely different approach. Mistakes to avoid: Do not use default PowerPoint templates. Do not animate excessively. If using text, follow the 6x6 rule — no more than six lines with no more than six words each. Do not load slides with information that replaces your speaking. Slides are a visual aid to complement your words, not to replace them. Never turn your back on the audience to read from the screen. Better approaches: Use full-screen images that evoke the emotion of your point. Add just one or two key words over a powerful image. Use looping video backgrounds available in MS Office and Keynote templates — these create subtle movement that engages audiences without distraction. Morphing transitions: The PowerPoint morph tool allows smooth transitions between slides, moving images and text fluidly. Use this for showing progression, zooming into details, or transitioning between concepts. Use it sparingly to avoid appearing gimmicky. Closing slides: Think creatively. Rather than a slide full of contact details nobody will use, try something distinctive — like a half-face image with a sideways QR code to your LinkedIn profile. Simple, bold, memorable. Less is more.

Your MC introduction must achieve four things: tell the audience who you are, explain why you are there, set expectations for what they will experience, and prepare them for the experience ahead. This is not your CV, not your LinkedIn profile, and not your bio — it is a bespoke document drafted specifically for each event. Template: Keep it to approximately 100 words. Include your name and positioning, your key credentials or differentiators, what the audience can expect, and a welcoming close. Customise a version for each event. Print two copies in large font (14-18pt). Arrive early, find the MC, hand them your introduction, and ask them to read it aloud to you. This ensures they are familiar with pronunciations and the flow before stepping on stage. Send your introduction well in advance in case it will be automated or loaded electronically. Types of stories used on stage: Client stories or case studies (typically a transition from despair to euphoria in two halves). Scene-setting stories (a prologue that establishes the context for your entire speech). Emphasis stories (used mid-speech to underline, highlight, or exemplify a specific point). Critical principle: Every story must serve your keynote’s destination. If a story does not create movement towards your desired outcome, remove it — regardless of how entertaining it is. Self-centred or egotistical stories that have nothing to do with your speech’s purpose should be dropped. Three story structures: Bookend stories split a story at a plot point — tell the first half early in your speech (the problem) and the second half near the end (the resolution). This creates anticipation and closure. Scene-setting stories with callbacks establish a relatable scenario at the start and return to it at the end, showing how the lessons of the speech illuminate the opening story. The audience gets the ‘aha’ moment when the connections land. Mid-speech stories should be introduced with a clear break — move to a designated ‘story space’ on stage, invite the audience with ‘Come with me...’ and return to your teaching position afterwards. Conclusion stories should be short and sharp — two to three minutes maximum. A good story is well-rehearsed yet delivered with the emotion of telling it for the first time.

Your opening and closing lines should be the only two sentences in your entire speech that you learn by heart and deliver perfectly. Everything in between flows naturally with the audience and slides. But these two lines must be crafted like your life depends on them. Opening Line: If you have a good MC introduction, you do not need to introduce yourself or even say hello. The first words out of your mouth must be so powerful that your audience is emotionally captivated. This can be a provocative question, a startling statement, or a moment of dramatic silence followed by a perfectly delivered line. Closing Line: This is your mic drop moment. Charge your audience to take action, ask a final question, or deliver a statement that leaves them speechless. The measure of a great closing line is the gap between your last word and the start of the applause — the bigger the gap, the more powerful the impact. Example technique: Open with ‘What do Alexander the Great and Winnie the Pooh have in common?’ Leave the audience wondering. Mid-speech, reveal that they share the middle name ‘the.’ Close with: ‘If your middle name was “the,” what would your last name be?’ This creates a thread that runs through the entire speech and gives the audience something personal to take away. The emotional rhythm of false endings — pausing as if finished, then continuing — keeps the audience engaged and heightens the impact of your actual close. Practice delivering your opening and closing lines with power and precision. These are your killer moments as an essential speaker.

Section 6: Important Guidelines

6.1 Language & Localisation

Use British/South African English spelling conventions (e.g., ‘programme’ not ‘program’, ‘organise’ not ‘organize’, ‘colour’ not ‘color’). Many participants will be based in South Africa and the broader African continent.

6.2 Reference to Voices into Africa

6.3 Tone Calibration
